Latinx and Latinx Canadian Imaginaries on Screen
From October 1st to 3, 2025, at Peel Street Cinema and the University of Montreal
The international symposium “A Diasporic Gaze: Latinx and Latinx Canadian Imaginaries on Screen” seeks to foster discussions around the evolving landscape of Latinx and Latinx- Canadian film and media arts. Bringing together scholars, artists, and industry professionals, the event will examine the cinema and visual arts produced by Latinx Québécois, Latinx Canadians, and Latinx communities in the United States. Speakers will address how gender dynamics, the trans-hemispheric dimensions of Indigenous identities, archival practices, and industry structures shape the creative production of Latinx diasporas across the Americas.
The symposium will also explore intercultural collaborations and workflows in the cultural sector, including innovative approaches to research-creation within Canadian universities. In doing so, it will reflect critically on the construction of “Latinx Canadiennes,” outline the emergence of Latin American diasporic cinema and visual arts over the past three decades, and highlight the growing presence of Latinx American and Latinx Canadian cultural production in academic research and teaching.
This conference was organized with funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC, Connection Program) for the project “For a History of Latin-Québécois Cinema: Communities, Circulations, Productions (1970–2024)”, in collaboration with the CinéMédias laboratory, the international partnership cinEXmedia, Espacio Mexico, Peel Street Cinema, the National Film Board of Canada, Wapikoni Mobile, Groupe Intervention Vidéo (GIV), and with the support of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the Université de Montréal and SSHRC.
