Film history would not exist without collectors. Whether through their pioneering collecting work or their passionate defense of forgotten parts of the world's film production, their lasting influence is felt both in the field and in their methods of understanding moving image history. Their contribution, however, remained in the shadow of academic and archival institutions until a new interest in archival issues, media archaeology, and the history of technology shed light on the importance of their activities.
Bringing together international scholars, collectors, filmmakers, curators, and archivists, this book provides a better understanding of the unique contributions of collectors to film aesthetics and history, as well as an opportunity to reflect on the epistemological and historiographical issues involved in building, maintaining, and using collections. By provoking a dialogue between milieus that have often maintained complex and sometimes tense relationships, it has the modest ambition of proposing a new field of reflection and a real challenge to history, both for the people and the institutions involved in the world of the seventh art.
