Écrans Croisés: cinEXmedia Launches an Intersectoral Digital Journal

Under the direction of Santiago Hidalgo and Marie-Josée Hébert, the publication will offer an innovative, inclusive, and accessible editorial model based on an intersectoral approach—a dialogue between disciplines from various fields of knowledge.

Santiago Hidalgo, director of the cinEXmedia partnership, and Marie-Josée Hébert, professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Université de Montréal and member of the partnership, have observed that an increasing number of researchers engaged in experimental approaches find that strictly disciplinary journals do not adequately accommodate their more transversal methods. The two professors therefore sought to create a space where those producing knowledge in the humanities and social sciences could engage in dialogue with researchers in the health sciences, engineering, and environmental studies.

This is why cinEXmedia responded to the call for proposals from the Fonds de recherche du Québec to create an intersectoral journal in French. Together with their partners, the Institute for Data Valorization (IVADO) and the Circé Network, Hidalgo and Hébert received a positive response, leading to the development of a new digital journal titled Écrans croisés. The journal will explore our various uses of screens by intersecting domains related to image, sound, and digital media.

Designed to incorporate multiple perspectives and to maintain intersectorality at its core, Écrans croisés aims to be a living laboratory where knowledge meets challenges and transforms itself. It promotes not only encounters between disciplines but also the growing hybridity of objects and tools in  their uses in today’s digital world. Rigorous dialogues between methods and theoretical frameworks will nourish a transformative process of research and publication.

Accessibility and Inclusive Interface

The editorial model of this journal innovates by offering publication formats adapted to diverse research practices. This approach values collective contributions and the sharing of situated knowledge. To enhance visibility and accessibility, it will rely on multichannel dissemination and an inclusive interface, in line with other cinEXmedia projects that prioritize accessibility in audiovisual media. Defining this innovative editorial model is the team’s first major challenge, along with identifying the key themes that will guide the production of the first thematic issues in the coming months.

Écrans croisés aims to become a leader in French-language intersectoral research in Quebec. Supported by leading institutional partners, its leadership team aims to transform this platform into a true living editorial laboratory—a space where publishing practices evolve in response to the contemporary challenges of knowledge.

The first issue of the journal is expected to appear in 2026, available first and foremost on the Érudit platform, following the same way other publishing projects connected to the CinéMédias Laboratory were published. Other forms of digital publication are also being considered. Further details will be announced soon on cinEXmedia’s website and social media channels.
